Spotlight on: genKC

GenKC_logogenKC is the young professionals outreach arm of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. It’s a newer organization (founded just 5 years ago or so) as part of the Chamber and Area Development Council’s joint efforts to attract and keep young, talented professionals in Kansas City. Their Steering Committee is made up of many of the large Kansas City-based companies, like Hallmark, HNTB, Black & Veatch, Burns & MacDonnell, VML and of course my company, emfluence.

Membership: $50 for individual membership; corporate rates vary by company size and can be a huge benefit for employees (see website for details)
Activities: between 8-12 events per year, focused on provided exclusive access or large-scale networking opportunities. The group has recently added community service projects and professional development events to their calendar and hosts a Community Partners calendar for fun events in Kansas City.
Who’s involved: Young Professionals in all industries in Kansas City in their 20’s and 30’s. Attendance at events ranges from 100 for professional development/community service to 700+ for networking and Access events.

Look to get involved in genKC if you’re:

  • 20’s or 30’s “ish” (they don’t card you…)
  • looking to meet other young, professionally-driven people in Kansas City
  • want special access to events and facilities in Kansas City (for example, we got to preview the updates to Arrowhead Stadium in Fall 2010)
  • want to learn how to better yourself and better represent yourself as a young professional
